About Us

We're the Faces of Empty Pockets Ranch LLC

I'm Shelby and this is my husband is Ty. How lucky am I to have someone who supports me in my dreams and all these        free-loading animals that I love?

We came to our property located in Coggon, Iowa because I was blessed enough to care for the sweetest mare I have ever met. No boarding barn was good enough for her. She was an aged quarter horse named Chex and had all of the signs and symptoms of PPID/Equine Cushings. I felt that no barn could provide all the things I thought she needed. I also learned so much about PPID/metabolic horses (and still learning). So we set out to find what Ty called "Pony Paradise" or "Chex's Retirement Home". We bought 10 acres, built our house, remodeled a barn on site, built pastures, tore down that old remodeled barn, and rebuilt a brand new barn. When we were building our place from the ground up, we poured all of our money into this place...coining the name, "Empty Pockets Ranch".

One of our favorite stories to tell of our adventure of building this place was from the night we moved in. We moved in on a Thursday, the day before pay day and we just laid down to go to bed. Realizing we would get paid in less than 15 minutes, we decided to stay up and see the money hit our accounts. Midnight struck and we pulled up the accounts. Ty had $3.00 in his account. I had his card earlier in the day to buy a drink at the gas station while moving our stuff and almost bought chicken strips...which would have overdrafted him! So literally allllll of our money has gone into this property. And now we have Empty Pockets!

Anyways, time marches on and I learn more about horse care and keeping, constantly learning. I learned about track systems and how beneficial they can be and how it provides the 3 Fs most important to horses: friends, forage, and freedom.

Once I learned about it, I knew I wanted to do this with my own horses and knew other horses could benefit from this type of  management. We proceeded to learn more, build the infrastructure, and move forward with creating a boarding barn for track system management and rehab. We want all the animals in our care to live their best lives!

Who I am

Shelby Van Weelden

I started in the horse world in 2004 with basic riding lessons. Having struggled to afford lessons, I became a barn rat. I spent all my free time at a barn north of Cedar Rapids. This is where I started showing at open shows, took care of horses, taught riding lessons, and met my best friends (who are still my best friends).

I bought my first horse just as I was graduating from college. He was a two year old paint gelding that I broke to ride. Due to no fault of his, I ended up in a serious riding accident and broke two vertebrae in my back. A friend offered me her old horse who I loved already if I agreed to sell my young horse to save me from any serious future riding accidents. I took her up on the offer and bought Chex, the horse who led us to Empty Pockets Ranch.

From Chex, I learned how special senior horses are and how fulfilling it is to care for a living creature who has experienced so much in their life. I took great pride in offering the best to her. But through her, I learned how much I didn't know. She helped me find the way as I tried to care for her with a PPID diagnosis. Ultimately, Chex was put to rest in September of 2025 after years of living with PPID. But! She got to live her best retired life at Empty Pockets the last five years of her life.

I hope to offer the level of care I wanted for Chex to other horses coming in for board. I want owners to know if they have a horse who is hard to manage, we are here to tailor to their needs as much as we possibly can.

I have been involved in the horse world since 2004. I have owned horses since 2013. I have cared for horses on my own property since 2020.

My background is in open pleasure type shows, low level dressage, endurance, and competing in the 2024 Mongol Derby. I've dabbled in jumping, barrel racing, cattle sorting, and mounted shooting. But through all of this, I have come to realize that the most fulfilling equine endeavor I participate in is simply caring for them.

Our Team

We are a husband and wife team who will both provide the care your horse needs. We live on the property and feel we have a very positive, supportive, and relaxed energy about our place.
